An Invitation
What if you never could come to church again? What would you miss?
Worship services, Sunday school, fellowship with friends, the music, Bible study, Mom to Mom groups, Methodist Men, the Turkey Dinner, Women in Mission, ......?
We think that this could happen in another country under an oppressive regime or in times of natural disaster, but it occurs every day right around Christ United Methodist Church. Those who are homebound because of health or who live in nursing homes or assisted living homes are cut off from the church at a time in their lives when they are most in need.
Volunteers in the Nursing Home / Homebound Ministry of CUMC have attempted for the last four years to bring the church to those who no longer can come to it. This has been done through one-on-one visits, weekly worship services including monthly communion, sing-a-longs, parties, Bible study, prayer group, arts and crafts, entertainment, memorial services for those who have died, delivery of flowers, and much more. In 2006, our volunteers have served 5 long term care homes and have visited 22 people who are confined to their own homes or to other nursing or assisted living homes. This was accomplished with the help of more than 50 individuals plus 15 groups from CUMC.
There is an opportunity for every person and every group in the church to be a part of this ministry in 2007. What is your favorite part of coming to church? Could you or your group bring that activity to someone who no longer can come to church? For example: two more homes have requested worship services. Could you or your Sunday school class present a worship service? Ask the Forum Class, the PACE Class, or the Disciples Class how they do it, or come visit a service to see what is involved. Could you lead a sing-a-long of old favorite popular songs or hymns or play the piano for one? We can furnish the song books, and you can come observe how we do it before you commit. Could you visit someone for 15-30 minutes twice a month? We can match you up with a new friend. Could you give a party such as the tail gate party we had this fall? Be creative. Think of what your gifts are and what you would enjoy.
Remember the song that begins, "I am the church, you are the church, we are the church together?" CUMC has identified four areas of emphasis for us as a church: to bring others to Christ, to care for one another, to care for our community, and to grow in our spiritual journey. You can do all of these in the Nursing Home / Homebound Ministry, and you are needed. For more information, call Kay McGowan at 972-596-7186.
