If Easter Were A Verb...

I think it was the great Welsh poet John Donne who brilliantly used the word “Easter” as a verb, asking God to “come and Easter in me.” I love that phrase because it clearly implies that Easter is not just a celebration that we attend one day out of the year, but that it is God living in us and changing us from the inside out. It is not just about what we say, but about what we do.

I wonder if you have thought about what might different if you were to allow Easter to be a verb in your life. If Easter were a verb, how would it change your relationships? What might a “resurrected” relationship look like?

If Easter were a verb, how would it transform your sense of commitment to those who have not been granted the rich opportunities that many of us have enjoyed; those who live with a “poverty of opportunity” as they say in our Project Hope program.

If Easter were a verb, how might it change the way in which you look at the future? If the Resurrection has guaranteed us God’s victory of life over death, forgiveness over sin, hope over despair, what would it mean to live expectantly and joyously and fully into that reality?

As for me, it is easier said than done. But that is my prayer this season: “Dear God, come and Easter in me.”

P.S. Don’t forget the shuttle parking this coming Sunday! Go north on Coit one block past the church to the Post Office anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The shuttle will pick you up, drop you off at the doors of the church, and there will also be happy surprises for your children!
