I don't know about you, but I am confused right now. Or at least my body is. Because of the time change, it wants to go to bed at 9 in the evening instead of 10. And it wants to get up at 4:30 instead of 5:30. My circadian rhythm is all messed up.
But it gets worse. My computer is confused by the time change as well, and it is causing havoc around our office. There are appointments that I put on my calendar for November 5th that are now on November 12th, and I am not the only one this has happened to. Coordinating our calendars on staff has been like a three-ring circus lately. We are all confused!
The truth is that life itself can be rather confusing. Oftentimes our best intentions are short-circuited by reality, like the field-goal kicker who trips and breaks his leg on the way onto the field to boot the winning field goal.
I once watched a live variety show that featured famous actors working as amateurs in circus routines. It went well until they got to the monkey act. All of a sudden, for no apparent reason, the monkeys went wild and became violent, attacking the actors and creating chaos. It was both terrifying and hilarious. Sometimes the "script" for life just doesn't play out as intended.
Enter the church. To be sure, things can be chaotic and confusing in the church as well. The preacher's sermon can be confusing. The children's Easter egg hunt can turn into chaos. The search for Biblical truth can create more questions than answers. But one thing is certain:the church stands in the midst of our confusing lives and proclaims the love of God to a broken and hurting world. There is no other institution in society that does that. There is no institution more deserving of our support.
I hope that you will join me in praying not just for our church in this season of finance campaigns, but for all churches. God is at work in the life of our churches in powerful and mysterious ways, and God's Kingdom grows as we commit our resources to the work that they do. In the midst of a confusing and chaotic world, there is nothing more important than that.
