Loving God, Serving Others ... Transforming Lives

Perspectives Adult Sunday School Class

9:45 a.m., room N253

Perspectives focuses on applying Christian principles to their daily lives through shared discussion, service, social events, and spiritual growth for couples in their 30s and 40s.

Mission Statement:

To apply Christian principles to our daily lives through shared discussion, service, social events, and spiritual growth for couples in their 30’s and 40’s.

Curriculum:

Our discussion topics relate scripture to contemporary Christian issues such as marriage, communication, careers and parenting. The class curriculum is being scheduled through spring 2010. We have recently enjoyed class-led discussions on the following topics:
  • History and Meaning of the Creeds
  • Body Image
  • Love Languages
  • Prelude to the Crusades
  • Intelligent Design and Creationism

We participate in material-sharing with other adult Sunday school classes by donating our old study materials to the church library.

Class members are encouraged to volunteer and lead the class discussion on these topics or others of their choosing. If you wish to volunteer, have any comments or suggestions, or would like to order materials, please contact curriculum team members John and Angelyn McIlwain.

Mission Projects:

Perspectives has placed special emphasis on supporting Children's Ministries at CUMC. Our class provided the directorship and many of the committee chairpersons for CUMC Vacation Bible School. Perspectives also donated the food supplies and meal preparation for the Kindergarten Roundup last October. Most class members are long-standing Sunday school teachers for preschool and younger elementary Sunday school classes at CUMC. We have also placed a focus on the troops. Care packages are periodically sent to our armed forces throughout the year, and these are assembled with the help of our children on Perspectives family days. In addition, we take class time on selected Sunday mornings to greet our troops at the DFW airport.

For our local community, Perspectives provides dinners to the families that are served by Project Hope at different times of the year, most recently over the summer.  We also organize dinner deliveries to our class families with new babies---a long-time tradition! In addition, Perspectives provides lunches to the House on the Corner crews.

CUMC sponsored collections drives like the Salvation Army Angel Tree and school supply drives are annual mission projects which our class supports.

Class treasury funds go to a number of charities, including CUMC's Shoe Ministry, Crop Walk, Alternative Christmas, House on the Corner and UMCOR emergency relief.

Keep the following upcoming mission opportunities on your calendar:

October 24 - care package/card assembly for the troops

November 21 - class trip to D/FW to greet the troops

Please contact our Missions committee for any project opportunities you may have:  Alica Wanek, Jean Johnson and Beth Downs.

Social Calendar:

The class enjoys group social dinners at least once every quarter. Recreational events for the entire class are also scheduled every month. The kids love our annual picnic and birthday party for Jesus. We also have great Halloween, Christmas and Super Bowl parties!

Mark your calendars for the following upcoming events:

December 19th - annual Christmas party.  Childcare is available through CUMC Parents' Night Out.  Please contact Liz Turner (liz@cumc.com) to make a reservation.

Our new Social committee is looking for suggestions.  Please email your ideas to Caroline Smith and Melanie Klingsporn.
